먼저 fishy라는 형용사가 있습니다. 우리말의 '수상한, 구린, 의심스러운'의 뜻을 가지고 있는데 발음할 때 fish와 혼동되지 않게 각별한 주의를 해야 합니다. Ex) Something about his scandal seemed fishy to me from the start.(나는 그의 스캔들이 처음부터 어딘지 모르게 수상했어.)    아마도 동서양을 막론하고 fish와 물은 분리해서 생각할 수 없을 것입니다. 그래서 feel like a fish out of water는 '어색하게 느끼다'의 뜻으로 마치 몸에 맞지 않는 옷을 입은 것처럼 어색하고 불편하게 느껴질 때 하는 말입니다. 예를 들어 정장(formal dress)차림으로 참석해야 하는 party에서 모르고 casual한 옷을 입고 간 경우 이 표현을 쓸 수 있습니다. Ex) Rodney felt like a fish out of water at the formal party.(라드니는 정장 차림 파티에서 어색해서 혼났다.) 또한 '술을 많이 마시다'라고 할 때 영어로는 drink like a fish로 표현합니다. 충분히 연상이 되는 숙어입니다. 그래서 '곤드레만드레 취하다'가 (as)drunk as a fish가 되는 건 당연하다고 하겠습니다.    Cry stinking fish는 글자그래도 해석하면 '냄새가 나는 물고기를 소리쳐 알리다'의 뜻이 되니 '자신이나 자신이 거둔 업적에 대해 스스로 험담을 하가'가 됩니다. 우리 속담의 '제 얼굴에 침뱉기'에 해당한다고 볼 수 있습니다.    A fine kettle of fish는 '혼란, 곤경'을 말합니다. 이때 fine 대신 nice, pretty등을 쓸 수 있습니다.Ex)This is a fine kettle of fish Mike got us into.(이게 마이크가 우리를 곤경에 몰아넣은 일이야.)    우리말로 '물에 빠져죽다'는 의미로 '물고기 밥이 되다'는 말이 있는데 영어로도 그 발상은 같이 feed the fishes로 표현합니다.    Fish for라는 표현도 있습니다. 이는 내심을 품고 무언가를 얻으려고 할 때, 혹은 정보를 간접적인 방법으로 탐색할 때 쓰는 표현입니다.
